Wellness Program
We are pleased to announce this excellent opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of all employees within our district. Recently, Cabinet met with Dr. Rott from Kaiser regarding developing a wellness program for our employees. What Dr. Rott shared with us was eye-opening:
1. By 2014 medical costs per person are expected to be $10,500 per year. That means a family of three is looking at $31,000 or more in costs!
2. The cost of health care has outpaced wages by a 4 to 1 margin since 1999. With our continued cuts due to California’s fiscal crisis, how do our employees continue to afford health insurance?
3. Lifestyle is the key to change. Did you know 71% of cancers, 82% of heart disease and 91% of diabetes conditions are caused by poor lifestyle and are avoidable?
There are many things not in our control, especially in these times. What we can do is work to develop a culture of wellness that will not only lead to lower health insurance costs but will lead to healthier and happier employees. We also recognize that we can compliment the existing VUSD Wellness Council and the VUSD Insurance Committee with this new Employee Wellness Campaign.
A group of Employee Wellness Coaches has been created and we are seeking Wellness Champions to represent each site and department within the district. Champions can be Certificated, Classified, or Management personnel. The Champion will be asked to attend the first Employee Wellness Campaign Meeting on Thursday, May 26th at 4 – 5:30 pm in the Community Room at the new Civic Center (200 Civic Center Drive, Vista). There will also be other periodic meetings during next school year. The Champion’s role is to lead and motivate staff at their site regarding wellness activities and to facilitate communication to employees regarding resources available from Kaiser, Health Net, and the community.
We need your help to embark on this cultural change. In these difficult times, it is vital for all VUSD staff to come together as a family and support the health and wellness of all of our members!
