Crisis Update   05.14.10

Dear Colleagues,
On Monday, May 17th we will begin to hold unit member meetings at different sites throughout the school District.  These meetings are to inform you about the upcoming Crisis team action that is planned for May 24th through June 4th.  You will receive a BLACK T-shirt to wear to school and Board meetings. This is the time to begin working as a cohesive unit and let our voices be heard throughout the District and community.  We are still no closer to an agreement and the District report on their website incorrectly states some of the facts.
* The District wants to impose PERMANENT class size increases in grades 6-12 that would give each teacher 20 extra students per day.
* The District is not willing to add language that would return Grades 1-3 to CSR of 20:1 students.  Even though the flexibility allowed by the state is supposed to end in 2012 they would not commit to ending the 24.94:1 in the school year 2012/2013.
* The offer of a raise in 2013 was confusing language that offered no true raise.  There were too many conditions put on any COLA.
* The District wants to increase the student minutes 4 days a week in K-5 to allow for an early release Wednesday.  This is teacher prep time that would be used for teacher collaboration and meetings.  The school site leadership team would be in charge of determining what would occur on those Wednesday meetings. We are concerned that at some sites it would be under the direction of administration and not the teachers.  Are we willing to give up prep time to collaborate?  A surveymonkey will be sent out this weekend to K-5 teachers to ask that question.
     Meetings: Place, time and date:
*Monday, May 17th, Vista Magnet Middle School Gym
Time:  3:00-4:00 first meeting, 4:00-5:00 second meeting
*Wednesday, May 19th, Empresa Elementary MPR
Time: 3:00-4:00 first meeting, 4:00-5:00 second meeting
*Thursday, May 20th, Lake Elementary School MPR
Time: 3:00-4:00 first meeting, 4:00-5:00 second meeting
No serious educator can rationally argue that permanently raising class sizes to absurd levels is good for the education of our children.  No parent would agree with that.  No teacher would agree to that.  And certainly no administrator should agree to that.
So let us fight for responsible class sizes on behalf of our own children, our own students, and our own community.  Permanent class size increases are not acceptable.
Wear black on Thursday, May 20th and attend the Board meeting that evening.  We need all teachers, parents, and students to help us fight for a powerful educational environment in Vista.
Stay Active.  Stay informed.
Respectfully,
Your VTA Crisis Team
